Changing Backgrounds in Photo Paintings
Changing Backgrounds in Photo PaintingWhen painting from photo sources to create digital artwork it is often necessary to alter or completely change the background. The customer who wants us to turn photos into art is usually only concerned with the primary subject matter, even if the background contains distractions or less than pleasing aesthetics. Painting from photo files that have been uploaded requires us to make a judgment call sometimes to automatically offer a painting version where this has been done, even though they may not have thought to ask for it.
In the video example above, our client knew right away that to turn photos into art that would make his wife happy, a very distinctive background replacement would be needed. A painting from photo sources that are separated by over 100 years is a bit unusual, but the 6-layer painting filtration system helped to blend them seamlessly. By placing the dog carefully in the foreground and rebalancing the golden tones of both photos to match we didn't just alter the photographs, we could turn photos into art. Most background replacement or retouching is less dramatic than this video example.
When painting from photo files where people are the main subject, especially when they are in the foreground, the background may not have been thought through or under the control of the photographer. In cases like this, we often turn photos into art by isolating the people and dropping in a more traditional 'portrait style' background. We then alter the color saturation and hue of that background to be compatible with the clothing, skin tones and lighting of the foreground subjects. Sometimes we use the same background but add texture and/or an 'out of focus' depth of field blurred effect to help simplify things.
When painting from photo files that have adequate, but not perfect backgrounds, we usually just retouch out the distracting elements, leaving the original mostly intact. By removing signs, phone or power wires and other modern intrusions we turn photos into art that is more classic, more timeless in overall appeal. Our goal is to create a painting from photo sources that have meaning for you, the end user, the person who will proudly display your paintings for years to come. These are all subjective calls, however and the proofing system allows you to comment and help guide us in the direction that you would like to see. In this way the process is truly much more collaborative than was ever possible before.
Painting from photo files that need background enhancements currently does not cost extra, but is included in the conversion and proofing process. The average number of proofs is in the 1-3 range, but we have done as many as 12 or more to get our clients totally happy before proceeding with their painting purchase. If you know at the time you upload your shots that a part of your photos into art project will include work to the background, or any other alterations, just send us a message through the 'Contact Us' tab or send an email to
g.ivie@YourPhotoToPainting.com. It will save a step in the photos into art proofing process to notify us before the first painting proof.
Creating a painting from photo files that are in need of extra work is a part of the challenge that we love, but since we offer free, no-obligation proofs we may not change the background for the first proof just because it may benefit your photos into art canvas. This is because not everyone purchases their paintings and we prefer to concentrate the extra effort painting from photo sources that are more serious about following through with a purchase.
